It's a rare occasion to find me up in the northern suburbs, but today was an exception as my sister and I wanted to brunch at the newly opened café, Tropico. Tropico’s breakfast menu runs from 7-11:30am, serving an interesting selection of dishes on breakfast boards and a lovely range of juices in jars. When we arrived, the café was bustling with people so the host promptly took our name, and we were warned that there would be a 15 minute wait.
For drinks we both ordered the Mango, Passionfruit and Raspberry Smoothie ($8.5), those being my favourite summer fruits. It was thick, frothy and had a bit of a tang from the passionfruit and some citrus I think was in there.
I ordered the Buttermilk pancakes ($16) with Pecan butter cream, Pure Canadian Maple with a side of crisp streaky Bacon ($4). The pancakes were fluffy and had pieces of freeze-dried berries and honeycomb on top. Paired with the bacon it had the right amount of sweetness and saltiness.
My sister, a dedicated quinoa lover, decided to get the Chia & Quinoa Salad ($15.5) which was topped with peach, berries, mint and lemon ricotta. Tropico sure knows how to make a salad look pretty, as the presentation makes it hard not to order this dish.
Would I return? Yes, I’d definitely love to come back to try their zucchini fritter or sweet & salty granola. It seems like I’ll have to venture up to North Beach more often this summer, for some swimming and brunching.
